Customer Reviews

Superb LCD TV5
I brought this HDTV even after reading the previous two reviews. Now that I had it for a while, I can say that this one excellent HDTV. I will address the biggest complaint in the two previous reviews, the sound quality. Well, the sound system to this TV will not be overpowering to anyone but it also quite functional. Chances are, if this is your primary TV set, you will have the sound system to go with your HDTV so the TV’s audio system would be immaterial. If this is a back-up TV, then the audio system is good enough for casual uses. I live near an airport and major road network and I don’t have any problem hearing this TV set. It would be nicer if the speakers were better but it does the job.

On the other hand, the picture quality, colors, contrast and everything else that goes with this type of TV is simply superb. I have tested out many 720p LCD set and I think this one got it all beat. This set also come with a build-in progressive scan DVD player that is tailor made for your DVD collection – that is your regular DVD collection and not the Blu-Ray or HD stuff. If this is your first HDTV buy and you got a large regular DVD collection like I do, then buying this set is definite no-brainer.

So what you have here is a 720p LCD HDTV that is definitely one of the best in its size, with a DVD player to boot and only weakness is that the audio might be slightly underpowered. I still gave it five stars in the end because the audio weakness didn’t bother me at all. Of course, my hearing could be better then the previous two reviewers.

great picture low volume output4
build quality is great. picture is great. volume output is too low making the tv hard to hear if there is any ambient niose whatsoever

A very good TV but pricey4
The 26″ Aquos is a very nice set for its size. It has a bright picture and excellent contrast. The set itself is a clean, slim modern design that will look great in any room. It is about as good as it gets for this size, remembering that the resolution will be better on a tube or plasma set. You won’t see 1080p unless you go up to at least a 32″ display. Nevertheless I am quite happy to have this set in a small room. Color and contrast are very good for normal broadcast and excellent for HD. The speakers could use a bit more depth to the sound. Hookup is intuitive but the instructions are a bit slim and it will get confusing when you try to resolve in what format your inputs get displayed. All in all a very good product, however.

Awesome5
Great LCD HDTV. 2 HDMI and 2 Component inputs. The QAM tuner is also awesome, I am able to pick up all of my local channels in crystal clear HD. No ghosting while playing my ps3. Nice glossy black finish. Also note that amazon messed up the name for the TV, its a 26″ not 23″ like it says.

Sharp delivers!5
We purchased this item about 2 weeks ago from Amazon for about ~$250 less than we could buy it locally. All the reviews were right. Very sharp picture, just the right depth to black colors, very rapid response time. We previously purchased and returned same sized Olivia, Westinghouse, and Vizio models trying to find a quality picture and decent features. Some other models would not communicate with our satellite remote, others did not have the function to change the screen size. The Sharp Aquos is a far better product. After seeing the super crisp image through regular broadcast, we went and installed an antenna to get local channels HD broadcasts and the images on the Sharp are just incredible! Highly recommend. And recommend Amazon’s highly competitive price!

FORGET THE CNET REVIEW, GREAT SET!!! NOT SO ON WHITE GLOVE DELIVERY5
Like a previous poster I was very concerned about the not too good CNET review, but bought anyway based upon my son’s recommendation. I am very satisfied with what I’ve seen so far. It compares very favorably with my Sony Bravia that I paid considerably more for than the Aqous.

Set has excellent sound and provides very good audio output for surround system. The picture, onced adjusted away from the factory settings, is very vivid with great colors.

One caution to anyone ordering who might not be physcically able to lift a 51 pound tv set, the stand for the set must be assembled and attached to the set.

The “White Glove” delivery guys will not do it for you. They also will not connect any equipment (cable box, dvd, sat box, etc.) to the set. So, be prepared to have else available to do those things on delivery day.

All things considered, I’d do it again.

Good Tevevision, Terrible Customer Service, Defect4
I ordered Sharp Aquos LC46D85U on 12/23/08 by Amazon.com and received it on 01/02/09.
PROS:
I mainly bought this television for gaming, animation, and as a home theater tv, let me tell you it didn’t disappoint. Gamemode actually works, I did a test with Super Smash Bros. Melee with composite cables there seem to be no lag in gamemode, with component cables it looks much better and there seems to be zero lag in any of the tv’s AV Mode. Unlike the Samsung I had, game mode didn’t work with either cables that is if you’re an advance player and you do all your “L-Canceling” with your f,b,u,d-air. I wanted to know how this tv will fair against a HTPC, so I connected it to one though via HDMI instead of VGA. I was testing HD out and the color was so bright and deep anime(720p) in HD is awesome!! 5 HDMI ports and 120Hz is a bonus, free blueray player is just a promotion, I would have bought this tv without it. YES YES picture quality! Digital Channel’s look great, analog is okay too.
CONS:
Unfortunately my tv came with a defect with the power supply. On the day I receive the television I was excited to give it a try, so I hooked it up tried turning it on it just wouldn’t turn on until 15 minutes or so. The tv works fine afterwards until you leave it OFF for a FEW HOURS , the same problem would occur. It wouldn’t turn on a ” cold start” so I decide to contact customer service. I emailed Amazon and waited 2-3 hours for a reply, I didn’t get one so I called them. It was rather difficult to understand because I was talking to someone living OUTSIDE of US, she only asked for my info it took quite awhile she finally tried to redirect me to someone who can help but she said they were off. I was very upset, the next day I received the email from AMAZON, they told me to contact SHARP first and have a “case number” with them. I called Sharp, their customer service was terrible they told me if the dispatcher comes and nothing is wrong with the tv I had to pay for service on a BRAND NEW TV. With the defect I had the dispatcher could have came and said nothing was wrong with it if he/she was able to turn it on. I was extremely upset at that point, but I decided to put up with it and continue this daunting chain. Dispatcher called me the next day, he was on his way but Sharp gave him incorrect address and info for both of his customers that day including myself. Only thing that was correct was my “case number” and my “cell number.” The dispatcher took my tv and told me he’ll have it fix within 3 days. Three days now, so I give him a call he told me the part was on backorder now this really upsets me, he told that he will contact the part he is ordering and call me back. Never called me back so I called back, turns out he didn’t even make the call, finally I was put on hold and he told me that the tv will be finish tomorrow. Hopefully it will be finish.
CONCLUSION:
I’ve been an Amazon customer for about 2 years now and have never been disappoint up until now. Amazon and Sharp’s customer service was not helpful. I don’t mind waiting a little, but calling and waiting for a response was very time consuming. Amazon should just arrange for a replacement, not make me contact Sharp first. 4 Stars for Tv’s quality minus 1 star for defect, but mainly for customer service from Amazon and Sharp. I apologize for the long compliant, but I’m extremely upset with customer service and had to make sure everyone knows. Although I recommend this television I don’t recommend buying it here as customer service was terrible. Good Television otherwise, amazing picture quality like some reviews have stated. Take my word if you have the money spend an extra hundred or two and buy it in stores.
UPDATES:
The power supply was replace on 01/09/09 as promised, but problem was not resolved. It was rechecked and delievered once again on the 01/12/09 but the problem was still occurring. He told me from day one that the problem could either be the power supply or control panel. So my local dispatcher replace the control panel board and delivered the television the next day. Everytime the dispatcher delivered the tv, he was always reassuring me that he will get it fix, if not Sharp will personally replace it. After a few days of testing the issue is finally RESOLVED on 01/13/09. The TV came back with some minor scratches (only visible up close) on the frame which doesn’t concern me and no visible scratches on the LCD. I was concern about the quality of the tv after repair, but I guess it still okay now. Sorry, this is not really a good review on the tv itself but just some issue you might encounter.
FINAL COMMENTS:
2D fighting games seems to be lagless on ps2 with component cables, I’m pretty sure DDR and Guitar Hero will be lagless too. Cables Matter. Oh, I forgot to mention that yes this model has a 10 bit LCD panel. Not really sure what this is yet, but I’m pretty sure that it has something to do with the quality rather than a 8 bit panel. Thank you for your time!

Regards Diana

10 months now5
It’s a great set and I would compare it favorably to any Sony that my peers have. No problems thus far.

Customer Reviews

Very fine TV4
Quality
I had another LCD Sharp for four years before this one. That one has survived two cross-country moves and the pixels are still perfect. My feeling is that Sharp’s panels tend to have fewer dead pixels than their competition. Also, there are many fewer complaints about the sets suddenly not turning on after two months (in stark contrast to Samsung). So I regard Sharp as a high-quality but relatively cheap LCD TV maker.
Picture
The picture quality is fine (I’m not a videophile) and HDTV really is lovely. Imagine being able to see the food served on the Food network… to say nothing of a football or golf ball. I like the 120MHz motion de-juddering, but I have it turned to low rather than high. It really is quite unnatural in the high setting – everything looks like an episode of the Teletubbies. Maybe I’ll get used to it. The “OPC” thing is annoying, but you can turn it off and/or stop the little leaves from appearing every thirty seconds. I think it has something to do with dynamic contrast, which takes the ambient light in the room into account, but I can’t be sure. Suffice it to say, the picture is pretty good.
Sound
Also fine – how loud do you want it? Actually, the bass is a little overdone, but I’ve hooked up a soundbar and everything sounds great now. Nicely enough, this set acts a bit like a receiver: all my audio signals get channelled into the TV through HDMI connections and then I use a digital audio output to send it to my soundbar. I don’t need multiple wires to connect my soundbar. I thought that was a nice feature.
Set-up
Easy. Clear manual. Good menus. Functional remote control (which also operates my other Sharp TV and looks almost identical!).
Why buy?
The styling is fine. It’s not as thin as the latest Samsungs but it’s only 40 lb (that’s considerably lighter than last year’s D85U, which this replaces) and the design works well.
It’s energy efficient. Again, only the much more expensive Samsung LED-based LCDs are better, but they don’t have even lighting across the whole screen. Oh, there’s a Philips Eco-TV, too, but I never saw that in the shops.
It’s high quality and does the job. Basically, it’s a brand name product with the latest technology at a no-name price.
Why only 4 stars?
I wanted an LED set! No, seriously, this is a great TV with plenty of inputs (9 by my count, of which 5 are HDMI) and it’s energy efficient and light enough to transport or wall-mount. It’s not the lightest or the brightest or the loudest or the fastest, nor is it the cheapest, but it’s a good compromise on all those things.

Several pros, some cons.5
I got this LCD to replace an Aquos 42D65U; mainly because of my old set lacked a 10-bit panel and 120Hz video processor, features that are present with this set.

I am kind of picky regarding features and while some people might think Im a bit exaggerated regarding details this review is to address anyone whom needs to know specific details to help to decide about getting this set.

PROS:
-There are a lot of options in the menu that let you fine-tune the calibration of the image. If you own a calibration DVD or Blu ray you can easily achieve a perfect image and color balance that can also be tweaked to your personal taste.
-Input lag in GAME Mode is practically inexistent; I read that some brands have severe input lag while other brands also offer some sort of GAME mode to reduce such lag, but after personal comparisons SHARP manages it better.
-120Hz processing gives you a very smooth image and not as exaggerated as displayed by other brands and also NO artifacts!
many people turn this option off because it sometimes look unnatural, and I agree. Watching a movie that looks like a soap opera its not cool and sometimes it looks just plain silly and eerie, but this set manages it without going to the extreme and looks smooth and natural…and you can just turn it off if it bothers you.
Also note this: NO artifacts!

CONS:
note: I repeat, Im picky, maybe you wont notice these CONS and if you do you may not give a lot of thought to it as they are not catastrophic faults.
-that 10-bit panel promise of smooth transition between colors is not quite true. While it certainly alliviates some instances of color transition, that step between different shades of the same color are still present, not a deal-breaker issue, maybe you even havent noticed it.
-Light Banding, If you dont know what banding is, dont look for it, dont go fishing for problems. Old Aquos set had this problem and VERY more noticeable than it is in this set; also not a deal-breaker but mildly annoying if you look for it and visible only in specific panning scenes.
-Transitions of skin tones in faces sometimes look a bit posterized, or softened. Im stubborn and picky I want to see the pores on averyone faces, be able to count the eyelashes! But if you watch TV from the recommended distance then its absolutely no problem and also it might be a matter of personal taste for some people since professionals recommend to set the sharpness of the picture at low settings. Turning down the Fine Motion and dejudder settings dont alleviate this issue, but as I said, its only somewhat visible in skin tones at close-ups, otherwise the details of objects are spot-on.

MOVIE and GAME modes are my recommended settings since I found both DYNAMICs, STANDARD, PC and USER modes more of a chore to calibrate and ultimately pointless since movie/game work perfect for me.

The picture is gorgeous, Blu Ray movies look amazing and both Xbox and PS3 also have excellent image quality and no lag. The price is really accesible compared to other brands and it might not have LAN connectivity or included content as weather widgets or cooking recipes as competing sets but you might already have several devices that offer those functions and its not a big deal.

So if you are disappointed in looking around the web or forums for those very specific details regarding this LCD I hope this helps you.

Awesome picture!4
Just setup the tv last night to watch the Blazer game (thumped Denver!!!). Incredible picture and the faster processor kept up with the action pretty well (120hz). Setup was a snap, very intuitive if you’ve plugged in most any other electronics/gaming systems.
The only knock on this set are the speakers which if turned up are flat and tinny. That is not a concern for us as we’ve wired for surround however if you do not have a sound system I would consider a sound bar.
