Great HDTV for its price, but…4
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RL6B4V365XSHF I uploaded a video of the Toshiba 40RV525R displaying some TV, Blu-Ray, and video game. (Just a small reference… obviously not going to be exactly how you see it in real life from a recorded video camera; on top of that, an internet video/low resolution/etc…)

This was my first real HDTV (supporting 1080p). Anyone can get super excited over their first HDTV and rate it a 5 star immediately (going from a standard definition to HDTV is definitely a major upgrade to anyone). However, if you’re very PICKY like me, you’ll be *somewhat* disappointed with the video quality.

If you’re like me and have been drooling over the image quality from several of the high-end HDTV models (you know, the ones that cost over $1500-$2000+), on display in retail stores — and then expecting to get the same quality out of this (okay, it was wishful thinking but you never always know just from prices…), well you’ll be disappointed.

When I see those TV, I’d be blown away like I’m seeing directly through a window instead of a TV screen. Naively, I was hoping for that same effect. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not horrible that I would want to return this TV, but “you get what you pay for”. (well, technically, it’s still a little better than what you pay for… did that make any sense?) Just keep that in mind. For the price, though, I can’t really complain so I’m keeping it.

You just won’t get that super super sharpness with this. You need to be a couple feet away; up close, for the very picky eyes, you will easily notice the grainy/fuzzy-like-paintbrush/interpolated effect (I hate this…), muddled together than every object being 100% sharp to the minute detail.

The potential of the Blu-Ray image quality is definitely not there. Animation like Wall-E / Final Fantasy Spirits Within Blu-ray looks pretty good, but I’m just not that impressed when watching Dark Knight/Iron Man/Transformers/Black Hawk Down/The Matrix — even tested it with Planet Earth and Baraka…to list a few. The graininess is just really obvious in all of them. Although, again, I am very picky in image quality.

The D-Sub connection for the PC is really worthless and waste of potential on the monitor; it only supports 1360×768 max. To get full 1920×1080 resolution from a PC, you first need a video card that has a DVI-out and supporting that resolution (or if it has an HDMI out then great).

Second, you need a HDMI male-to-DVI male cable to connect the TV to the PC’s video card. I’m quite impressed with how PC games on this TV look at 1080; it easily beats from how games look on PS3. Definitely makes a great Media PC monitor.

Some other thoughts:
* I’m using the regular “rabbit ears” antenna and 1080i shows/channels still look pretty good with it.
* DVDs won’t look as sharp like on a standard definition. However, again, if you’re far away enough it can look okay. The contrast/blacks are definitely better/more feeling of depth in the picture. *updated thoughts at very below*
* The speakers aren’t as bad as I thought. There is some surround sound. The bass is weak, but most built-in speakers are.
* When I first turned it on, 40″ seemed really big to me. But after a couple weeks, it’s not as big as I thought. It’s good enough for a small room, but for a main TV in a large living room, you’ll soon definitely want to have something larger. The screen does reflect a little bit.
* I think it’s nice that it has 3 HDMI ports, which is more than enough for me. (PS3, PC thru HDMI)
* I really can’t tell the difference having the benefit of “game mode” on when I play games.
* I usually turn the auto contrast mode off because it’s apparent when it changes its brightness than being subtle. It’s pretty annoying.

Pros:
- Good entry level HDTV at an affordable price (I can’t believe I paid close to this amount for a small 19″ PC monitor just a few years ago… ugh technology)
- Black finish/stand Toshiba logo glows (it can also be turned off through the menu)
- Games look good. (PS3/PC at 1920)
- Excellent for a Media PC monitor (using HDMI)

Cons:
- Doesn’t look that great up close. It’s not really sharp. It seems to interpolate/very grainy smudgy/”paintbrush”-like effect.
- D-Sub is essentially worthless at 1360×768 resolution (use DVI-HDMI to connect to your PC!)

Considering this isn’t Toshiba’s higher REGZA model and the price, it’s definitely a good entry level HDTV. Definitely far from a perfect 5 star, but if you’re on a budget and not overly picky like me, you should be happy with this.

I recommend getting a HDMI cable too (don’t be spending over ten dollars on it!)

Update: I was using the PS3 to playback DVD (it’s supposed to upscale). However, I’ve recently tried playing a DVD back on a Philips DVP5982 (it has 1080p upscaling function also via HDMI) and it did A LOT better job upscaling than the PS3. The difference was quite noticeable. Of course Blu-ray video still has more detail, but the DVD looked almost as good! (depending on the DVD, the compression is still apparent, but properly upscaling that resolution really makes the difference) So I take my comment back about DVD looking not as sharp. Your mileage will definitely vary depending on what player you use, so if you have a better Blu-Ray player than the PS3 (what I used to playback Blu-Ray movies), you may get slightly better results than what I see.

a solid entry-level LCD…4
If you are, like I was, looking for a 40″-42″ flat screen television for a secondary room (bedroom/den) then this Toshiba is worthy of consideration. The picture quality is very good, its digital tuner is sensitive (ie, brings in lots of stations), and its priced very competitively. My only complaints are:

- you will need to fiddle plenty with the color controls to get something that looks decent. Out of the box I found flesh tones looked very orange-y.
- the audio is fairly weak. Hooking the system up to a stereo/av receiver is almost a necessity.

So when price is considered this Toshiba unit is very good. Take price out of the equation and it is only fair/good. Buying this for a secondary room makes perfect sense.

Great tv and value for the price!5
I bought this television at best buy a few weeks ago, and I am incredibly happy with it. As stated by other reviewers, this is a SOLID entry level hdtv with only minor drawbacks.

Picture Quality: is GREAT. Those with INCREDIBLY picky eyes will be the ones that sit there and analyze each pixel, but the bottom line is this is a 1080p television and the blu-rays and video games I play through my PS3 (playstation 3) look fantastic. Absolutely can’t beat the quality for the price!!

Sound Quality: this is where the tv gets shaky. the sound isn’t great, just average. A different reviewer said that flat televisions don’t become flat by getting large speakers, very true. you’ll want to buy some sort of speaker system to go with the television to get that true theater experience. PERSONALLY, I just use the tv in my 10×12 room so the sound is adequate for me, but i’m still thinking of getting speakers.

Features: the tv has great black levels and colors. you will want to do alot of tweeking right out of the box because all of the factory levels are set so high. Once you get the tv to a good spot, just sit back and enjoy looking at all the cracks and crevices on people’s faces. there are some features that I don’t think do much, like “game mode” specifically, but they are nice to have.

OVERALL: If this is your first foray into the HDTV world, like it was for me, I would HIGHLY recommend this television. This is especially recommended for those of us on a budget, but wanting to make the move to HD.

So far extremely happy5
Excellent TV!!! Have had it for a few months, and no issues. Crisp image with no blur. The 120HZ technology is a real breakthrough, as I have no issues watching the action / sci fi movies I love.
Easy remote and menu navigation, my wife and I had no trouble adjusting the settings to our preferences. Wife loves it too.
It has many inputs, so we have been able to connect all our devices to it. Love it!!!

Toshiba at par with Samsung 120Hz5
After having Samsung 52 inch 6 series in our living room, it was very hard to settle down for lower quality HD second TV set for our master bedroom. Well, we bought Toshiba Regza 46XV540U 120Hz. Taking out of the box and running it we were just amazed with picture quality and sound. Sony Blue ray picture is just incredible. We couldn’t ask Santa Singh :-) for anything more.
Please don’t get brain washed with soaring Samsung’s reputation. Buy Toshiba Regza 46XV540U 120Hz without any hesitation. It will suprise you that it’s picture quality is almost at par with Samsung.
Online sale runs between $1800-$1500. We bought this TV at Costco for $1150. Good luck!!

Toshiba 46XV540U is great!!5
I purchased the Toshiba 46XV540U at my favorite volume wherehouse store for $1199 one week ago. I originally planned on buying a Panasonic 42″ 1080p Plasma, but after discussing Plasma panels with some video engineers at work, I was NOT convinced that it would be free from image retention (burn-in), especially since I watch a lot of 4:3 programming and I didn’t want to lay awake at night worrying about having left-right bars burned into the screen. Then I set my mind on either a Sony W4100 or Z4100, but my local wherehouse only had a 40″ Sony. The 46″ cost too much. I settled on a Sony because I own a Sony 55″ SXRD, which I find stunning, and as good as any Plasma or LCD, and it’s 120Hz and 1080p/24 display. Then I saw the Toshiba, which stated that it had similar specs as my SXRD. After obsessing and doing extensive research, I decided to buy the Toshiba. I was hesitant since I really liked what I saw on the Sony LCDs. Out of the box, the Toshiba looked good, but the levels needed to be toned down. I initially used a THX DVD (any DVD that is THX certified, like Toy Story, Monsters, Inc), and the disc has a THX setup menu that will help you adjust any TV to look pretty darn good. Later I used the Video Essentials DVD for further adjusting. After setting the color, tint, brightness and contrast, I couldn’t be happier. One of my biggest necessities of any HDTV is that it displays SD (standard def) channels well, and I’m happy to say that this Toshiba does a great job. HD on my Charter cable looks stunning in 1080i. Blu-Ray is jaw-dropping. I also watch a lot of sports and the 120Hz option looks great, and from what I’ve read in test reports, the Toshiba handles this better than Sony, and I condider the Sony better than Samsung for this. Anyways, the Toshiba colors are excellent, it gives deep blacks, I don’t see any pixel blurring or lag and fast motion on sports looks rock-solid. AND, this 46″ Toshiba cost about $500 less than a similar-sized Sony. The speakers in the Toshiba give satisfactory audio, especially for my bedroom, where I have this set. The image looks pretty good even at extreme angles. The screen is matte-finish, which is essential in my opinion to control reflections. The bezel of the Toshiba is gloss black. I would have preferred a satin-black bezel, but no problem. The Toshiba remote is well laid out. I recently owned a Toshiba 50″ CRT rear projection set and I loved the remote on that set because of two things: 1) Mute does a half-mute first, then a full mute with a second press. Half-mute allows you to turn down the TV if answering a phone but you can still hear the sound. 2) The Channel Return will actually return you to a previous Input. So, if you are watching a DVD then switch to a cable channel to check out a football score, you can immediately return to the DVD by pressing the RTN button without the need of it bringing up the numerical menu or cycling through the Input options to get back to the DVD. This new Toshiba remote keeps these two great functions!! The 46RV540U is a terrific TV!

Great TV – Amazing5
Unless you want an inch thin LCD TV, this should be your TV of choice. I went to Sixth Avenue where they had an exceptionally large selection of LCD and Plasma TVs. This TV had the best picture quality of any LCD TV they had. I was planning on getting a Samsung 1080P 120Hz thin LED TV (could not quite swallow the price of the 240Hz) model until I read reviews of streaks in the picture quality when watching the TV in a dark room. I then moved on to the less expensive non LED Samsung 240Hz LCD TV which is still $400 more than this Toshiba. Luckily, the salesperson asked me to take a look at this TV first. This TV is back-lit LED which makes the TV thicker, but provides better picture quality than the side-lit LEDs in the thin Samsung. The 240Hz was a real bonus–especially in a TV that sells for this price. I have had the TV for a month now and could not be happier with it. I have had friends that visit comment that this TV has the best picture quality they have ever seen in any TV. This is the best 46-inch LCD TV you can buy that sells for a price that’s unbelievably low when compared to the competition. It might not be the thinnest LCD LED TV, but it does have the best quality picture in any LCD TV. It is just one awesome TV.

Superb LED LCD TV right out of the box!5
Ordered this TV around the beginning of August. Amazon shipping said to expect it on the 14th. It arrived on the 12th, lucky I had just returned home because I was all set for the 14th! Anyway, The delivery guy carries it in, takes it out of the box and set it on the stand for my old Sony Bravia.(Since I didn’t put the new stand together yet. He then helps me take the old TV down to its new location in the basement rec room. (Nice of him!) We plug in the new Toshiba and I connect it to my cable HD DVR box with the new HDMI cable I also purchased from Amazon. It works! Beautifully! The sound is better than expected. The picture, especially the HD channels is great and the colors and contrast are fantastic. Everything I expected and more. The Dolby sound leveling seems to work (still checking). Our collection of wide screen DVD’s looks great. Maybe because of the Resolution+ upscaling. So check out all the features and compare the price with the only LED TV somewhat similar: Sony’s BR8 series. I think you’ll be very pleased with this new Toshiba 46SV670U (55SV670U is similar). By the way, mine was manufactured in JULY 2009!
I’ll update this if problems develop.
Well, it’s now October and this TV is still the best. And it’s great to be able to plug in a SD picture card and watch a slideshow or plug in an USB flash drive and play music or other media.
I’ll update this if problems develop.

Great picture with a few drawbacks4
I had been looking at and researching HDTVs for a while and had pretty much decided on going with a plasma, due to the better viewing angle and deeper blacks. I was a bit hesitant, though, about picking up a plasma because of all the “burn-in” horror stories that have piled up over the years, so I was still hoping to find an LCD display that would blow me away while still being affordable. When I came across this Toshiba, it appeared that this would be that LCD. I made several trips to the big box whose logo looks like a big yellow tag and spent close to an hour each time comparing a few different models as best as one can in the controlled lighting of the retail environment. I was impressed with the black level, overall contrast, and picture quality of this tv. The image also appeared to be cleaner than others, with very few jaggies or digital artifacts.

I ended up purchasing this tv (great deal with the free 19″) and taking it home. The screen size is plenty large enough to see clearly from 10 ft away, but not too bulky to carry inside, unpack and set up by myself . It looks great and feels sturdy. The light-up Toshiba logo is a pretty nice touch, but I set it to off since it’s a little distracting. There are a TON of picture adjustments available through a few standard and advanced menu options. A lot of these options are probably only available on most other sets through service menus, which are meant to be navigated by professional calibrating services. I spent the first five hours of Saturday and a few more on Sunday tweaking the picture while watching blu-rays, with my main attention on getting a good, dark black level and accurate skin tones. I got the settings dialed in to what pleases my eye and thought it looked darn good (maybe not a professional calibration, but I was very pleased with it). The sound was not as bad as I’ve read in some reviews. I never experienced the crackling that others have, but I also never needed to turn the volume up past 30, even sitting 10 ft away. So far, everything was great but naturally, with the good, you get the bad.

The drawbacks that I experienced were more personal annoyances, I suppose, but I’ve read that they are inherent to LCDs (to varying degrees), and I still could not ignore them after I discovered them. The first of which is the limited viewing angle. After the hours of tweaking, the set looks incredible when viewed head on. This changed, though, when I stood up or watched as I walked around the room. The black areas turn bluish and the overall picture loses its pop. This was the case if I viewed from any other angle than sitting on the couch directly in front of it. Granted, that’s where I plan on watching tv from, but if I wanted to watch from the kitchen or have guests over, it wouldn’t be as enjoyable. I was kinda disappointed because I had not experienced this in the store. It’s not horrible, just something I didn’t like. Also, it may have been exaggerated by how good the picture looks head on. The off angle picture may be as good as last year’s model, but by improving the head on picture, it doesn’t look as good from the sides. Who knows. I’m also coming from decades of watching CRTs where the viewing angle does not change. I knew to watch out for this with LCDs, but I guess you just can’t get away from it unless you spend a few grand on one.

My other gripe was with the uneven backlight, or cloudiness, in dark areas, especially along the top and coming from the top corners (“flashlight” effect). Before purchasing this tv, I had found only one account of this occurring with this Toshiba. I had actually forgotten about it and wasn’t looking for it when I noticed it myself. I didn’t notice it until nighttime when I had the lights dimmed and the screen was supposed to be black. It’s more apparent while performing non-viewing actions, such as switching inputs, changing channels, etc., but it is noticeable at certain times while watching movies. I didn’t notice this during the day but, again, just something I didn’t like. It’s also possible I received a faulty display.

All in all, this is a great LCD for the price. I couldn’t find one in-store in the same price point that came close. Great picture, super sharp, and lots and lots of picture tweaking options. I didn’t have the chance to take home any other LCDs to see if they had the same low viewing angle properties or uneven backlight that mine did, so I don’t know if this Toshiba is an exception or not. I did end up exchanging it for a plasma, though, because I felt they suit my tastes better (and it turns out that burn-in is not a huge issue anymore), but for those looking for an LCD and looking to spend $1200, I would highly suggest taking a look at this one.

excellent tv for money4
had this tv for about 2 weeks now. it replaces an existing tube tv (also toshiba). got this from best buy when they had it on sale for 1099. delivery was straightforward with original packing. tv came already assembled on the stand inside the box — all you have to do is lift and set it on your tv stand.
standard definition (SD) channels look ok — imo, all TVs (lcds, plasmas) should be able to produce SD signals as good as tube TVs. it’s like software being able to support earlier versions.
HD channels look very good but I just don’t think there’re enough of them out there yet.
initially i had a strange problem via the HDMI connection where it’ll prevent the remote to control the cable box the first 10 min after turning on the tv and cable box. after 10 min, everything’s resumes. scour the web for similar issues and found one post but no solution. my eventual fix is to connect both the coaxial and the hdmi cable and the problem went away.
another surprise with hdmi connection is it does not carry closed caption info, so i can’t turn this feature on and off with the TV remote. This is not an issue with coaxial connection. googled it and the solution seems to be hidden inside the cable box settings: to get to it, you have to turn the cable box off leaving the tv on. hit the menu button on the cable box remote to access the closed caption options.
so far my transition to hdtv has not been as smooth as i had expected but in no part the tv’s fault.
other things i love about the tv is the base it sits on is very wide so it looks extremely stable. the matted screen is great — no more unnecessary glare/reflections. Overall, the tv feels solidly built just like my old toshiba tube.

My second Regza5
I did a lot of research before purchasing my first LCD television. I decided on the Regza, and was very please with the picture quality. I haven’t seen any other LCD that surpasses the picture quality, but MANY that fall far short of the quality of the Regza. Given my level of satisfaction with my first Regza, I purchased another larger set for the new home. Again, very satisfied with the picture quality.

I only have one complaint. The right speaker vibrates to certain tones. Strangely, it seems to be tied to a certain level or quality of recording, because it’s not always vibrating. But, let’s say I’m watching a program on the Discovery channel. For the entire program, the speaker will frequently vibrate. Then, I’ll watch a baseball game on ESPN and will not hear a vibration through the entire game. Anyway…I’ve got external audio system hooked up, so when I REALLY want the quality I can just mute the TV and turn on the receiver.

This problem is probably a one-off, so I will not let it affect the overral rating here. I just don’t want to deal with the hassles of returning the darn thing and waiting for ages to get the new one.

That said, I highly recommend the Toshiba Regza!
